Hail Damage to Car Roof: Repair Cost and What to Expect

The roof is the most exposed panel in a hailstorm and often the most expensive to repair. Here is what roof repairs cost, when PDR works, and when conventional repair or replacement is needed.

Quick AnswerHail damage to a car roof costs $400–$1,800 for PDR when paint is intact, or $800–$2,500+ for conventional repair when paint is cracked. Roofs take the steepest impacts and often sustain the worst damage in a hailstorm. Use our calculator to estimate your full repair cost including the roof.

Why the Roof Is Almost Always the Hardest-Hit Panel

Hailstones fall nearly vertically. A vehicle's roof presents a horizontal surface that takes every stone at a direct, perpendicular angle — the highest-energy impact orientation. Doors, fenders, and trunk lids are angled or vertical, meaning hailstones hit them obliquely and transfer less energy to the metal.

This geometry explains why the same storm leaves 15 dents on the hood (angled) and 40 dents on the roof (flat), or why roof dents are consistently deeper than door dents from identical-sized stones. Roofs also have less structural support per square inch than other panels, making them more prone to deflecting deeply under impact.

What Does Hail Damage to a Car Roof Cost?

**PDR on the roof (paint intact):**

The roof is one of the more labor-intensive PDR panels because access typically requires working through interior headliner areas or sunroof frames. This adds time compared to door or fender work.

Typical roof PDR costs based on dent count:

- 10–20 dents (minor storm): $300–$600

- 20–40 dents (moderate storm): $600–$1,200

- 40–70 dents (severe storm): $1,000–$2,000

- 70+ dents or golf-ball-sized: $1,500–$3,000+ (if PDR is still viable)

**Conventional repair on the roof (cracked or chipped paint):**

When the roof's clearcoat is damaged, the panel must be refinished. Roof refinishing is expensive because the panel is large and blending the new paint into adjacent panels (pillars, roof rails) adds labor.

Conventional roof repair cost: $800–$2,500 depending on vehicle size, paint complexity, and whether moonroof trim needs removal.

**Full roof panel replacement:**

For catastrophic damage — baseball-sized hail, structural dents, or panels with previous body work that complicates repair — replacement may be quoted. Roof panels can cost $500–$2,000 for the metal alone, plus significant labor (6–12 hours). Total replacement cost: $1,500–$4,500+.

PDR on Roofs: Specific Challenges

Technicians working roof panels face access limitations that do not exist on doors or hoods. The primary access route is through the headliner — a padded fabric or vinyl panel that must be partially removed to reach the roof metal from behind. On some vehicles, this is straightforward; on others with complex audio systems, sunroof hardware, or headliner clips that break easily, it adds significant time.

Sunroof panels present a special challenge: the sunroof itself is usually glass and cannot be PDR-repaired. The surrounding metal frame can be accessed but the glass must be assessed separately. If the glass is cracked, that is a separate repair line item from the roof sheet metal.

Roofs also have reinforcement stampings — structural ridges pressed into the metal — that limit where rods can apply pressure. Technicians must work around these ridges carefully, which slows the pace of roof work compared to flat door panels.

Vehicles Where Roof Repair Is Particularly Complex

**Convertibles and soft-tops:** The roof mechanism and fabric top are vulnerable; even convertibles with metal roofs have complex mechanisms that complicate access.

**Vehicles with panoramic glass roofs:** The glass section cannot be PDR-repaired and is replaced separately. The metal border around the glass is the only repairable section via PDR.

**Older vehicles:** Paint brittleness increases with age. Roof clearcoat on vehicles 12+ years old is often at higher risk of cracking under PDR manipulation, turning a PDR job into a conventional one mid-repair.

Getting a Fair Roof Repair Quote

When you get quotes, ask each shop to itemize roof repair separately from other panels. This allows you to compare roof pricing directly and spot outliers. A roof PDR quote that is dramatically lower than others may mean fewer dents are being addressed; one dramatically higher may indicate the shop is pricing in unnecessary overhead.

Run the total damage through our hail damage repair cost calculator with your dent count, sizes, and whether the roof paint is cracked. The estimate gives you a realistic range to evaluate quotes against. For severe roof damage specifically, getting three written quotes from shops that have worked on your vehicle make is worth the time — roof repair quality varies more than almost any other panel.
